If you've ever asked ChatGPT a math question and got an answer that felt almost right—but not quite—you’re not imagining things. There’s a reason language models struggle with numbers. But there’s also a simple way to fix it: prompt ChatGPT to use Python.
Why Language Models Struggle With Math
ChatGPT is a large language model, not a calculator. It was trained on patterns in text—so when you ask it a math question, it predicts the answer based on examples it’s seen before. That works for simple cases, but for anything precise, it starts to fall apart.
It doesn’t actually calculate. It guesses what the answer should look like.
The Fix: Prompt It to Use Python
What most people don’t know is this: ChatGPT can run real Python code—and it will, if you ask it to.
Just prompt it with:
“Use Python to calculate the log base 10 of 1000”
And it will generate and execute:

This means you can handle logs, roots, trigonometry—even engineering-level math—with total confidence inside ChatGPT.
One Thing to Know
This works only when Python execution is available in your chat. Most GPT-4-level sessions support it automatically now. If ChatGPT responds with a code block and an answer underneath, you’re good to go. If not, you may be using a version that only simulates code.
