Creating video explainers used to mean bouncing between 3 apps and hours of editing. Canva's Heygen integration promises to change that. But how well does it really work? We tested it inside Singularity's AI-powered engineering workflows. Here's what we found.
What is Heygen-in-Canva? Heygen is a popular AI avatar tool that turns scripts into videos with lifelike presenters. Recently, it became available directly inside Canva as an integrated app. This means you no longer need to export from Heygen and re-import into Canva — you can build videos from script to final cut all in one place.
To use it: go to the Canva "Apps" tab, search for Heygen, connect it, choose an avatar, paste your script, select a voice, and hit submit. The video generates within minutes and appears right on your design canvas.
Where it Shines
Speed and Simplicity: For quick drafts, internal explainers, and social content, this workflow is incredibly smooth.
One-Tool Workflow: Designers and engineers can stay inside Canva without jumping between platforms.
Decent Output Quality: While not perfect, the avatars are clean enough for non-client-facing use cases.
Where it Falls Short
Robotic Feel: The avatar movements and voice still feel AI-generated. For high-trust, human connection? It doesn't quite land.
Render Time: Though faster than separate tools, 3–6 minutes still adds friction when prototyping multiple takes.
Limited Editing: Once the video is generated, you can’t adjust lip sync or pacing. You have to re-render from scratch.
For engineers producing course content, internal SOPs, or fast project recaps — this is a great addition. You can generate talking-head videos to explain prompts, show workflows, or summarize changes without ever leaving Canva.
But if you're making public-facing explainers or want more control over visuals and pacing, Heygen solo or other video tools still offer more flexibility.
The Heygen x Canva combo is perfect for speed and internal clarity, not polish. If your goal is quick turnaround with decent output, this is a strong tool to test. But for premium content, you’ll likely want more control.
