Engineering Companies Don't do this with AI

If you're a boss or a manager in an engineering company, don’t do this with AI.

The fastest way to kill AI adoption is to force it from the top down.

A senior exec sees a cool AI demo, buys the software, and announces, “We're using this now.” If you push an AI tool on your team without asking them first, it’s probably going to fail.

But here’s what actually happens:

  • Engineers feel blindsided.

  • Nobody asked them if it solves their real problems.

  • The tool ends up collecting dust.

AI can be amazing for engineers but only if it helps with real, everyday tasks.

Start here:

  • Stick with ChatGPT first. There's so much you can do with it.

  • Example use it to to draft an email.

  • Ask it to summarize design notes.

  • Try it on a quick P&ID review.

If that helps? Then connect it to your Google Drive or email for faster context. Later, build simple automations or agents — but only after it’s already useful.

If you force an AI tool from the top:

  • Engineers won’t trust it.

  • It won’t fit their workflow.

  • It becomes a distraction instead of a solution.

AI in engineering works best when it’s introduced like any good tool:

  • Starts small

  • Solves a real pain

  • Grows with trust

Let your engineers pull AI in — not have it pushed on them.
